Lidocaine Skin Numbing

Lidocaine is used for skin numbing prior to certain needle and other minimally invasive procedures, such as laser, venipuncture (blood draws), microneedle, dialysis, tattoos, hair removal waxing and others that cause pain. Lidocaine skin numbing creams are used to treat the pain, burn and itch symptoms caused by some minor skin irritations, hemorrhoids, insect bites/stings, minor burns and other related conditions.

Lidocaine Skin Numbing

There are many lidocaine skin numbing products on the market. Lidocaine skin numbing products are sold online, in stores, in pharmacies and used at doctors and spa offices. The difference among lidocaine skin numbing products is found in the different formulations as well as packaging. Some lidocaine skin numbing products have penetration enhancing ingredients included in their formulations. These “drivers” are used to help the active pharmaceutical ingredient (API), lidocaine, to permeate the outer, barrier layer of the skin where it can serve its purpose of numbing the localized area. The barrier layer, called the stratum corneum, performs the functions of blocking toxins, microbes (viruses, fungus, and bacteria) and other contaminants from entering the skin. The drivers are chemical ingredients that temporarily increase the permeability of the skin which in return allows the API, lidocaine, to enter the skin.

Lidocaine Skin Numbing Cream Drivers:

  • MSM (Dimelthyl suflone, Methyl sulfonyl methane)
  • DMSO (Dimethyl sulfoxide)
  • Ethoxydiglycol
  • Propylene glycol
  • Urea
  • Isopropyl miristate
  • Liposomes

Each of these drivers are known to assist in delivering the API into the skin. DMSO is known to delivery API’s into the blood stream as well. This many NOT be a positive effect for use in a lidocaine skin numbing cream product, since too much lidocaine in the blood may be toxic. Using too much lidocaine, too often or for too long on large surface areas, especially when combined with DMSO in the formula, can lead to cumulative systemic absorption with the risk of toxicity.

When using Lidocaine Skin Numbing products, always make sure to clean the treatment area with soap and water prior to applying. Apply a thin layer of the cream (about 1/8″ of cream or gel) using a swab or a gloved hand. Massage into the treatment area until the cream is fully absorbed. Most effective topical lidocaine skin numbing creams will reach their peak effect within 15 – 20 minutes. Once the peak effect is achieved, remove by washing with soap and water or a clean warm, wet towel.
